ACT Launches New and Expanded Volunteer Resources SiteACT volunteers now have immediate access to volunteer resources directly through the ACT Web site. The site has a video archive of past ACT events and workshops highlighting topics from the "From the Trenches" panel with experienced project leaders talking about some of the common challenges volunteers face to a workshop reviewing helpful tools and tips for nonprofit consultants from McKinsey & Co. and Bridgespan industry experts. In addition to the videos, the site features past project work plans, work breakdowns, mid-term reports, final reports, and online tools and resources to help with project administration and research. To log in to the Volunteer Resources site, you will need your gsbNet username and password. If you need to register for a gsbNet account, please go to the SBSAA Web site. Volunteer Profile: Joseph Bagley, MBA '71 For years Joseph
Bagley, MBA '71, was focused on his high tech marketing career,
unable to find the time to devote to his longstanding interest in
environmental issues. Early in 2002, the tech slowdown gave him
an opportunity to consider doing some pro bono work. When he learned
about ACT's Sustainable Conservation project, he realized that he
had found his match. Sustainable Conservation is a San Francisco organization headed by former ACT board chair Ashley Boren, MBA '89. She and her staff asked ACT to look at the potential for recycling autos over 1 million are abandoned in junkyards every year in California. The ACT team, including four alums and two students, set out to create a business model for their client. Joe marveled at the dynamics that enabled the more experienced alums to create a cohesive team from a group of geographically dispersed people with widely varied backgrounds. He also enjoyed the enthusiasm of the current students. They have so much energy and so many new ideas, plus they are upto-date on the latest jargon. After the Sustainable Conservation project concluded last May, Joe assumed he would take a few months off but his very persuasive classmate Jim Graber convinced him to apply his talents to the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) project. SFBBO had asked ACT for help with strategy and organization, as well as for assistance with the development of a funding model. With the SFBBO project now wrapped up, Joe seems to be hooked on ACT. There is a lot of gratification from doing the job, and seeing order emerge out of chaos. Currently working on an early-stage tech startup, he is even considering a transition into the not-for-profit sector. His advice to other alums hesitating about taking the plunge into ACT: Just do it. You always think that you will have more time later, but there is never an ideal time. Do it now.
